We like doing complicated information graphics — the best find us having to simplify the relationship between multiple variables. The more complicated, and the more in need of explication for a general audience, the better. Some of our favorite illustrated breakdowns of data sets and systems have been for Metropolis magazine.

The Bilbao Effect was a timeline for Metropolis magazine, accompanying a story on the worldwide explosion of signature architectural in cultural buildings post-Guggenheim Bilbao. The formal structure refers to the Bilbao itself. Designed while Andy was with Pure+Applied, with art direction by Paul Carlos and Criswell Lappin.

This chart breaks down the Prairie Waters Project, a new irrigation system in Colorado. The pleasure here was in developing a structure that provided a big picture perspective of the system, while also breaking down the details of each component. Art direction by Criswell Lappin.
